The Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale on May 14, 2019, featured an incredible range of artworks from the 19th and 20th centuries. Claude Monet’s illustrious “Haystack” series painting “Meules” broke the auction record for the artist by selling at $110.7 million (including premium). According to Sotheby’s, this is the first piece of Impressionist art to exceed $100 million. The sale registered a total of $349.8 million (including premium) — a 9 percent increase against the last year’s total of $318.3 million.
This May sale at Sotheby’s New York was at its peak in 2015 at $368.4 million followed by a sharp decline (60 percent) in 2016. From 2017 onwards, there has been an upward trend, leading to enormous successes in 2018 and 2019 with record-breaking works sold.

The same sale at Sotheby’s last year made a significant mark by selling the most expensive work of 2018, Modigliani’s “Nu Couche (Sur Le Cote Gauche)” at $157.1 million (including premium).
Monet’s “Meules” has now reached the top 20 expensive works sold ever at auctions, and is now ranked at number 11, according to BASI. And with this painting, the French painter enters the $100 million club.

The second highest work by Monet “Nymphéas en fleur” was sold at Christie’s New York for $84.7 (including premium) in 2018, and the third highest rank was also from his famed “Haystacks” series —“Meule,” 1891, which fetched $81.4 million at Christie’s New York Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in 2016. Here’s a list of top 10 most expensive works by Monet at auctions.

Pablo Picasso’s “Femme Au Chien” was the second highest work of the sale at $54.9 million (including premium) that sold for over twice the auction low estimate of $25 million. “Mousquetaire à la pipe” by Picasso again was the third highest ranked work at the sale at $20.7 million (including premium). Other notable works include view of the Parisian streets “La rue halévy, vue du sixième étage” by Gustave Caillebotte, which fetched $13.9 million (including premium) and Fernand Léger’s “Le Campeur, 1er état,” which sold for $8.2 million (including premium).

Here’s a look at the top 10 works sold at the Sotheby’s sale:

With the recent increase in buyer’s premium at Sotheby’s, the auction house has increased the 20 percent threshold from $3 million to $4 million and has added an extra percentage point to its charges above £4 million (earlier 12.9 percent, thus a new rate of 13.9 percent).

Buyer’s Premium at Sotheby’s New York, effective February 25, 2019
Up to $300,000 — 25%
$300,000 to $4 million — 20%
Over $4 million — 13.9 %
