Italian sculptor Fabio Viale’s masterful marble sculptures of everyday objects can currently be seen in “Stargate,” his first solo show at Sperone Westwater in New York. Viale’s carvings of a towering grocery crate, a crumbled paper bag, and a hallowed sailboat that is actually functional are meticulous, uncannily realistic, and the product of nearly five years of physical labor in his studio in Turino. Viale shared with ARTINFO the physical challenges of sculpting in marble, and the significance of the show’s title “Stargate.”
