Move Over Little Mermaid: Elmgreen & Dragset's "Han" Sculpture Joins the Race to Become Denmark's New National Icon
On June 2nd, the duo behind Trafalgar Square's monumental gold child on a rocking horse will unveil their response to Copenhagen's Little Mermaid. Elmgreen & Dragset's "Han" — "he" in Danish — is to be a slender stainless steel boy sitting on a smooth rock on the harbour of Elsinore, eastern Denmark.
Elmgreen & Dragset, with characteristic wit, have added a fairy-tale like detail to their latest creation. Thanks to a hydraulic mechanism, "Han" will blink once every hour, as if on the brink of waking up from his sculptural eternity. Whether or not The Little Mermaid's male twin will dethrone his bronze sibling remains to be seen, but it will no doubt be a popular symbol for Elsinore's culture-orientated redevelopment of the harbour, adding its gentle charm to Hamlet's historical setting.
