Andy Warhol Pop-ified a whole series of Renaissance paintings, including a detail of Sandro Botticelli’s legendary “The Birth of Venus” in the 1980s. Warhol’s rendition (right) sold at Sotheby’s for $5.5 million in November, but the buyer could have also paid about the same thing for an actual Botticelli this month at Christie’s Old Master paintings sale on January 30. The artist’s portrait of Madonna with baby Jesus and St. John the Baptist (left), once owned by John D. Rockefeller, is estimated at $5 million to $7 million.
