TOKYO — Takashi Murakami is set to open a Scandinavian-themed art bar in the otaku-themed Nakano Broadway shopping mall in western Tokyo on November 2.
Called Bar Zingaro, Murakami’s first venture into producing an F&B outlet is themed around coffee, cocktails, and art. The beverage expertise for the new establishment is being provided by Fuglen, a specialist Norwegian coffee and cocktail café whose main branch is in Oslo.
The first overseas branch of Fuglen opened in Tokyo in May 2012 in the up-and-coming Tomigaya neighborhood, doing triple duty as an espresso bar and café open from the morning, a cocktail bar in the evenings, and a Scandinavian vintage design boutique, and has quickly become a firm favorite of in-the-know locals and style arbiters like Monocle. Most recently, Fuglen also assisted with producing the café component of Intersect by Lexus, a new “luxury brand experience space” by Lexus that opened in Aoyama on August 30.
Bar Zingaro is the latest addition to a small empire of art galleries that Murakami also operates in the Nakano Broadway complex through the auspices of his Kaikai Kiki Gallery — Kaikai Zingaro, Hidari Zingaro, pixiv Zingaro, and Oz Zingaro. These four galleries tend to show works by younger artists and other creators who typically fall outside the domain of contemporary art, including the ceramics that Murakami himself is particulary fond of (click here for a recent interview with Murakami on his love of Japanese ceramics).
Fuglen Oslo owner Per Gunnar Tulsen, who handled the interior design of Bar Zingaro, has also curated an exhibition of select Scandinavian furniture that will be on display at Hidari Zingaro, Oz Zingaro, and Kaikai Zingaro from November 2 through 17.
Bar Zingaro opens November 2 and is located on the second floor of Nakano Broadway, 5-52-15 Nakano, Nakano-ku, Tokyo.
