VIDEO: Warhol-Like Brillo Boxes Big at Armory Show
One of the hottest commodities at The Armory Show can be found for a couple hours after the show opens.
Near the entrance of Pier 94 are a stack of artist Charles Lutz's cardboard replicas of Andy Warhol's “Brillo Boxes” — that is, while supplies last. Every day of the fair, Lutz constructs what he calls a Tower of Babel of 250 boxes that are free for visitors to take home. Lutz is on hand to sign his works and talk about his project commissioned by Eric Shiner, the director of the Andy Warhol Museum and curator of this year's “Armory Focus: USA.”
Most visitors break down their Brillo boxes so they are easier to carry around, deconstructionism Warhol may well have been proud of. But don't try to take boxes to the coat check. They have instituted a strict "no Brillo box" policy.
