Award-winning Films at Starck-designed Hong Kong Hotel
Hong Kong’s J Plus Boutique Hotel, also known as “that place designed by Philippe Starck,” has recently created what is quite possibly the best hotel DVD collection in the city right now. The new cinematic additions range from crowd-pleasing Oscar winners to emerging filmmakers on the Asian indie circuit.
Guests at the design-centric hotel can perch on a signature Starck armchair, or, in certain rooms, a Frank Gehry wiggle chair, while they devour the new movie collection culled from winning features at recent Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, as well as Hong Kong’s own Asian Film Awards.
Most people have probably already seen “The Artist,” “Black Swan,” or “Girl With a Dragon Tattoo,” which are all new additions to the J Plus in-room cinema. But few visitors to Hong Kong may know local director Fruit Chan, whom J Plus’ GM Vivian Chau says is her favorite director, along with Ann Hui and Ang Lee. The three filmmakers’ works are featured in the GM recommendation list.
Up and coming directors are also represented by the collection of short films selected by the Incubator for Film & Visual Media in Asia (ifva). The DVD compilations of each year’s award-winners at the ifva festival are a showcase of Hong Kong and mainland China’s brightest filmmaking talents. Career-making projects from past festivals include Jia Zhang Ke’s “Xiao Shan Going Home.”
With a collection like this, visitors to Hong Kong will get a full on experience of Asia before they even set foot outside the hotel.
