LOS ANGELES — Artist Laura Owens recently unveiled a new series of large-scale paintings in a Boyle Heights warehouse, also home to the new Ooga Booga 2 bookstore, in a gritty downtown area previously known more as a truck depot than as a site for fine-art viewing. With the help of her gallerist Gavin Brown, Owens transformed the cavernous interior into a studio as well as exhibition and performance space; over the next six months, the 12 paintings she created on site will be on public view, followed by exhibitions and programming to showcase L.A.’s emerging and established artists. ARTINFO’s Yasmine Mohseni stopped by to view the exhibition and speak with Laura Owens about her work.
