Eye on the Runway: Rag & Bone Fall/Winter 2013
The seductive formula of “short skirt, long jacket,” made famous by the alterna-rock bank Cake, was the name of the game chez Rag & Bone this season. In 34 looks, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville offered a program of modishly oversized blazers and peacoats over micro-minis and straight-cut mini dresses.
Outerwear was by far the narrative here. In fact, the tightness of the clingy sweaters and nubby shorts felt ancillary to the trenches, anoraks, and swings coats on parade, turned out in a toothsome palette of eggplant, slate gray, and olive green.
Since its inception, Rag & Bone has matured from a hip denim company into a major lifestyle brand. The illusively cool Rag & Bone girl has grown up over the years, swapping out jeans for mohair sweaters, oversized herringbone coats, and tweedy separates. Unsurprisingly, the brand is showing some growing pains. At times, Wainwright and Neville struggled to find an age-appropriate middle ground between the geriatric and the juvenile. One royal purple wool jacket and skirt ensemble whiffed of Lagerfeld-lite, while an orange hooded bomber jacket conjured up the problematic notion of inmate chic. All in all, the season’s jaunty haberdashery might not move the fashion conversation forward, but it will inevitably produce clothes that women will want to wear.
