10 Art Institutions to Pique Your Interest in Pinterest, From SFMOMA to Pace
If you still think of Pinterest as just a place to find instructions for D.I.Y. salads in mason jars, D.I.Y. candles in mason jars, or D.I.Y. mason jar-themed weddings, think again: Visual organizations like museums, galleries, and design firms have thrown themselve into the pin-crazy world with gusto. We took some time to track down some favorites from the array of foodporn and braid tutorials — here, then, are 10 of the best art-related Pinterest accounts:
Best Museum Pinterest: SFMOMA
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art could simply upload appealing images from its vast collection and categorize their boards according to artist, exhibition or genre, as many museums do. But it goes an extra mile by enticing pinners with theme boards such as “It’s hip to be square,” dedicated to geometric art; “Drip drip,” with paintings and photographs involving water in all its forms; and “Sunlight,” a collection of works from various genres and time periods that explore the capturing of light.
Best Design: Design Milk
Designers and design fans who constantly want fresh inspiration, particularly those who have a love of pets, will find themselves mermerized by the Design Milk account. The board keeps its pins current, providing followers with the latest in swirling staircases, interior design, inventive architecture, and mind-bending furniture. However, the best detail is perhaps that 11 of their 40 boards are dedicated to innovations in doggy design.
Best Photography: DP School
Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or a newbie looking to test your snap chops, the Digital Photography School’s Pinterest account has something for everyone. The school breaks down genres of photography through a series of boards with photography how-tos; “low light,” “sharp focus,” “portraits,” and “lighting basics,” are a few examples. The account also includes boards for how to shoot common subjects, like weddings, babies, portraits, and nature. For the more advanced photographer, there are boards about shooting fireworks, sports, and even astrophotography. But whether you are a photographer or not, of the nearly 60 boards, all are filled with mesmerizing images that explore the beauty and art of photography.
Best Gallery: Pace
We give the New York mega-gallery an A for consistency and thoroughness. Pace updates their account with boards from their most recent exhibitions, and goes a step further with a complimentary board of work by artists currently on view. The result is a Pinterest board that acts as a catalogue of happenings in contemporary art while also providing a visual textbook of great artists of the past.
Best Art Media: Juxtapoz
We’ve always loved the strong, bright, eye-popping images that grace the covers of Juxtapoz Magazine, which makes the publication particularly stand out on news stands. But what we like even more about their Pinterest account is that in addition to being packed with that same content — constituting some of the other coolest visuals on Pinterest, scouted out by the trained eyes of the magazine editors — it also shouts out other organizations in re-pins, and graciously pins content that links to sites other than their own.
Best Art Books: NYPL
If you love reading about art as much as seeing it, or are a serious typography/book design nerd, the New York Public Library’s Art Pinterest account is a must-follow. There are boards that illustrate exhibitions the NYPL hosts, that suggest books to check out and music to go along with those reads, and that showcase Library ephemera, as well as boards that collect images from books-turned-films. What’s more, the NYPL shares boards that utilize the Library’s archived collections, like the “Mad Men” board, the “Downton Abbey” board, and the “New York City” board, which gather images relating to their titular entertainment phenomena and related historical subject matter.
Best Street Art: Hookedblog
As visual, lighthearted, and amusing as street art can be, we find it surprisingly scarce on Pinterest. However, following Hookedblog will fill your feed with a steady stream of poppy urban art. And while the blog is based in London and pins mostly artists that pass through the rainy city, we commend this pinner on their “Street Art World” group board, which invites street artists and graffiti enthusiasts from around the globe to pin to a common board.
Best Art Shopping: MoMA Design
Looking for gifts for your art-loving friend? Adding to your design colection at home? Check out the Museum of Modern Art’s Design store boards, where you can find salt and pepper shakers, iPhone covers, furniture, umbrellas, and a plethora of gadgets organized by color, theme, artists, or season.
Best Art Organization: The Art Fund
The Art Fund raises money to help museums and galleries buy works of art. Their Pinterest account definitely draws attention to that mission, utilizing boards to update the public their different projects, as well as providing a healthy mix of classic and contemporary art. What we love most about this account, though, is the fund’s “Artist Rooms” board, which consists of a series of video pins where curators from the Tate Modern take you on a tour through galleries, talking through important works of art as if you were actually there.
Best Architecture: Archinect
We must admit, what first attracted us to this account were the fun plays on the word architecture. Boards titled “Architect Sure!” and “Artchitecture” give a sense of the whimsy that following this account will bring to your feed. This pinner organizes jaw-dropping images of photography by color and material, and will even bring you the latest in architecture news.
