Our most-talked-about stories in Visual Art, Design & Architecture, Fashion & Style, and Performing Arts, January 21- 25, 2013:

ART

— Lori Fredrickson unearthed the surprising highlights from the art collections of 2oth-century dictators from history, from Adolf Hitler to Saddam Hussein.

— Art+Auction tracked YBA Tracey Emin’s appeal with star collectors like Kate Moss and Charles Saatchi.

— For Modern Painters, Rachel Wolff profiled Indian printmaker Zarina Hashmi, whose long overdue retrospective at the Guggenheim opens today.

— Coline Milliard interviewed German fashion photographer and artist Juergen Teller on his forthcoming show at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts.

— Ben Davis attended the opening of Wolfgang Laib’s newest pollen-based artwork and MoMA, and what he dubbed its "postmodern pastoral" qualities.

DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE

— Janelle Zara explored a fast-growing international trend of "anti-anxiety objects" in an essay on the aesthetics of relieving stress.

— A clone of Zaha Hadid’s starchitecture in China continued to stir controversy, and Kelly Chan examined how digital technologies led to the pirated design.

— In an effort to reboot it’s brand, the financially turbulent American Airlines unveiled a new logo by Futurebrand updating the 45-year-old iconic Massimo Vignelli design — to the dismay of the design community.

— Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “adAPT NYC” competition found it’s winner with nARCHITECTS' modular design for micro-living spaces that are transformable for optimal day and night use.

FASHION & STYLE

— As New York Fashion Week approaches, Nicholas Remsen and Vanessa Yurkevich sat down to interview esteemed fashion world figure — and the event’s creator — Fern Mallis on camera.

— The couture spring ’13 collections premiered in Paris, with dark looks from Giambattista Valli and Valentino, as well as Ulyana Sergeenko’s southern belles and Karl Lagerfeld’s sprites.

— The men’s collections brought varied tones to Milan, Paris, and London, and ARTINFO rounded them all up with a slideshow of the top 10 looks for Fall/Winter 2013.

— The week’s most talked about styles were worn by First Lady Michelle Obama at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Chloe Wyma provided insight into the FLOTUS’s bold and elegant-as-always choices.

— Raf Simons’s sophomore collection for Christian Dior received praise for its romantic flair and airy executions.

PERFORMING ARTS

— J. Hoberman took a look at the cinematic avant-garde in MoMA’s current survey of Postwar Japanese art.

— Craig Hubert bravely infiltrated the cult theatrics of Mark Harris’s transmedia project “The Lost Children,” at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

— Playwright Arthur Bicknell of “Moose Murders” fame spoke with Patrick Pacheco about his new book and the history of the epically failed play.

— Larry Blumenfeld caught up the third generation of the musically talented O’Farrill family, Zack and Adam O’Farrill, discussing their influences, musical origins, and the state of the jazz scene.

— Agnieszka Holland’s “Burning Bush” is shaping up to be one of the most-talked-about miniseries this year. Graham Fuller reported on the HBO depiction of self-martyring protestor Jan Palach during the Prague Spring.

VIDEO

— For our "Gallery Night" video series, ARTINFO checked out Andy Freeberg's print show, "Guardians," at the Andrea Meislin Gallery. It's a series of photos taken at four museums in Russia, capturing images of the women who guard the precious art.

— Fern Mallis is among fashion's most acclaimed figures, having almost singlehandedly raised the profile of New York Fashion Week-and, by extension, the CFDA-to an international level. She sat down for an in-depth interview with ARTINFO.

— ARTINFO's Patrick Pacheco and contributor Frank DiLella give us the rundown on the big names and shows headed to Broadway this spring.

— Under the hands of Italian sculptor, Fabio Viale, banal objects are recontextualized on marble. In his first solo show "Stargate" at Sperone Westwater in New York, Viale presents sculptures of grocery crate and paper bags in a larger-than-life scale.

— Moscow's historic city center emerged in the 12th Century. It's stood the test of time and today it is a top tourist attraction around the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ARTINFO’s Vanessa Yurkevich takes on on a tour... in 90 seconds.
