NEW YORK — This weekend, Klaus Biesenbach is rallying volunteers to aid the storm-battered streets of Rockaway Beach, where the the MoMA and PS1 curator has a home. Biesenbach plans to meet volunteers outside the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research building at 4 West 54th Street at 10am on Saturday, and then will drive people and supplies out to the Rockaways.

"The scene out there is heartbreaking," he said in an email to ARTINFO. "Be prepared... it is our city... it is us."

Biesenbach is urging volunteers to bring gas-driven pumps, drinking water, candles, nutrition bars, toilet paper, vitamins, and "perhaps something to keep up your spirits, like a piece of chocolate." Supplies will be distributed at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club on 87th Street.

In the meantime, he is also opening up PS1 to displaced New Yorkers. In an open letter posted on the museum's Facebook page, he wrote:

"Please consider MoMA PS1 a HOME and a SHELTER during this time of difficulty in New York. MoMA PS1 will be open to the community. We know it's not much, but we're happy to offer you a free cup of coffee, a place to rest and charge your cell phone, and to convene with other members of the community and be dry and safe..."
