Despite the fact that she’s been stuck with the same sexually ambiguous boyfriend for the last 53 years, Barbie is a bit of a maverick. Controversy about her over-sexualized frame aside (been there, done that, let’s not revisit it), she’s gone from Malibu to the moon, from the ballet barre to the boardroom, and even run for president. In her most recent incarnation, she was a paleontologist. And thanks to London’s resident rebel Louise Gray, the iconic blond bombshell has been reinvented yet again.

In connection with her Barbie-sponsored spring 2013 collection, which was debuted in September during London Fashion Week and featured three black and white looks printed with graffitied abstractions of the doll’s trademark signature, Gray has released a one-off high fashion Barbie. Styled just like the punk warriors from Gray’s spring runway, the doll’s face is painted with Basquiat-inspired crown eyebrows that were originally created for the show by makeup artist James O’Reily. She dons disheveled bouffant hair, mirrored earrings, and a mini version of the 3-D devoré Barbie print dress from the catwalk (which, come winter, will be available in normal human sizes, along with the rest of the spring collection). “It was fun to replicate a runway look in Barbie size. I wanted her to have everything from the catwalk including the hair and makeup, as well as all the detailing of the dress for a full look,” said Gray, who, like many of us, frequently played with Barbie as a child.

Gray is not the first designer to dress Barbie as an avant-garde plastic femme. In the past, Alaia, Chanel, Comme des Garcons, and Prada (just to name a few) have made her custom looks. And while Barbie has indeed proven herself to be a force in fashion, it’s safe to say that Gray’s design marks her first adventure as an elegant anarchist. Now, if we could just do something about Ken…
