An unprecedented auction of contemporary art by some of Australia’s most celebrated and desirable contemporary artists will be held at the National Gallery of Victoria on the 16th of October as part of the 2012 Artevent – a spectacular gala and art auction, the proceeds of which support the Jewish Museum of Australia.

Following the great success of Artevent 2010, the Museum is once again hosting a dinner, followed by a party and art auction in the impressive atmosphere of the Great Hall at the National Gallery of Victoria.

The unique auction of works of art by 28 of Australia’s leading contemporary artists has been curated by an expert arts committee convened specially for Artevent 2012. All the works have been considered for their merit and significance and are of the highest calibre.

Funds raised by the auction will contribute to the essential services of the Museum, including the preservation and management of their collection, their annual program of exhibitions and their education and public programs.

Included in the sale are highly covetable works by leading Australian artists such as Juan Ford, Sam Leach, Bill Henson, Rick Amor, Brook Andrew, Laith McGregor, Patricia Piccinini and Guan Wei spanning the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation and photography.

According to ArtEvent 2012 patron Naomi Milgrim AO, “Artevent is a collaboration between the art world and the Jewish Museum and is reflective of the respect which the Museum holds for the art world, and the respect held for the Museum in the arts and wider community”

2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Museum which is dedicated to the collection, preservation and display of Jewish art and culture, with a particular focus on the Australian Jewish experience.

“The Museum strives towards the creation of a society where cultural difference and diversity is respected and celebrated. It aims to foster and nurture a contemporary and proud Jewish identity whilst also educating the broader community about Judaism and Jewish life in Australia,” explains Museum Director Rebecca Forgasz.
