Art fairs often feature the same galleries year after year. Browsing the aisles becomes an exercise in visiting old friends rather than making new discoveries. But at NADA Miami Beach, the funky alternative to Art Basel Miami Beach, that’s not the case. ARTINFO got an early peek at the exhibitor list for the Miami fair’s 10th anniversary edition, and over half of the 60 exhibitors at the fair are new or returning after an absence. The exhibitors hail from 25 different cities and 14 different countries.

“I think that given the fact that NADA is a place where people know that you can start out, we do get a lot of new applicants every year,” NADA director Heather Hubbs told ARTINFO. In addition to launching a New York edition during Frieze Week this year, NADA also recently expanded to Cologne, which Hubbs credited for the uptick in applicants from Europe.

Among the fresh faces are the Elaine Levy Project of Brussels, Curro & Poncho of Guadalajara, Kendall Koppe of Glasgow, COLE of London, Churner and Churner of New York, Roberto Paradise of San Juan, and Peres Projects of Berlin. Returning to NADA after a stint at Art Basel Miami Beach are International Art Objects of Los Angeles and Zach Feuer Gallery of New York.

As always, some dealers heeded the siren call of the Miami Beach Convention Center, leaving NADA to exhibit at the bigger Art Basel Miami Beach. Among them are Ignacio Liprandi Arte Contemporáneo of Buenos Aires, Jessica Bradley Art + Projects of Toronto, and Eleven Rivington of New York, all of which will be exhibiting in ABMB’s Art Nova section. Altman Siegel Gallery of San Francisco and Dublin's mothers tankstation, which showed at NADA last year, will exhibit in ABMB’s Art Positions section this time around.

Selecting exhibitors can be tricky business for a fair that is also a dealer organization. (The New Art Dealers Alliance was founded by a group of New York gallerists over drinks in 2002, and has since invited approximately 300 galleries and individuals to join the group.) Just because you’re a member doesn’t mean you’ve got a secure spot at the fair.  “There are always galleries who don’t quite get it because they’re new,” Hubbs said. “But I think most people understand that now.”

A number of NADA members who exhibited at the fair last year — including Kate Werble Gallery, Regina Rex, and Locust Projects — won't be returning to the main gallery section, but may exhibit in the fair's invitation-only Projects section. NADA Projects, devoted to emerging galleries presenting booths dedicated to a single artist, will feature 26 participants to be revealed in the coming weeks.

The total number of exhibitors was slightly lower this year, because the organizers were endeavoring to offer galleries larger booths. The more spacious 2012 edition of NADA Miami Beach will take place at the Deauville Beach Resort at 6701 Collins Avenue from Thursday, December 6 through Sunday, December 9.
