Confetti, Cookies, and Lil' Kim: Opening Ceremony Celebrates 10 Years With a Monster Megaparty
NEW YORK — When Carol Lim and Humberto Leon founded their boutique Opening Ceremony on Howard Street in 2002, they had no idea it would eventually culminate into the “It” brand for the hip set. Ten years later, Opening Ceremony has locations in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo; capsule collections galore with an endless string of designers, including Alexander Wang, Rodarte, and Jean Paul Gaultier; and a huge cult following of hipsters, fashion’s biggest names, and celebrities.
So how do you celebrate 10 years at the top? By calling on the personalities behind New York’s most iconic club nights of the last 10 years — The MisShapes, The Smiths Night at Sway, 1992, Ghe20 G0th1k, Clubber Down Disco, and Club Luxx — and joining forces with them to throw the megaparty of the decade at Webster Hall. “For our 10-year anniversary, we wanted to celebrate the last 10 years of nightlife, so we decided to do a party that celebrated all parties… to really celebrate New York City,” Leon told ARTINFO at the bash on Sunday, before yelling “Balloon drop!” and running off to soak it in.
The party, which invaded all four floors of Webster Hall, doubled as a reunion for downtown scenesters and bold names close to Opening Ceremony’s inner circle, including Chloë Sevigny, Spike Jonze, and MIA. A truck doling out Momofuku cookies stood in the 1992/MisShapes room, Tenga’s Keith Haring sex toys were handed out in another corner, and a photo booth captured memories of the night. Dancing, debauchery, and confetti drops ensued before the crowd was treated to a performance by rapper Lil’ Kim. Afterwards, workers handed out a rainbow of light rings (the modern version of glowsticks?) to anybody and everybody who would take one, and a rave-like dance-a-thon followed.
“Opening Ceremony is what it is because of everyone that’s at this party and all these people that couldn’t even attend,” said Leon. “We wanted to throw a party to celebrate everyone that has really contributed to us in the last 10 years.”
They definitely did it right.
