“It takes a lot of work to figure out how to look good,” Andy Warhol once said. Now, thanks to a new Nars cosmetics collection inspired by the late pop artist, looking good doesn’t have to be so difficult.
Warhol, his poppy pieces, and his superstars have a starring role in the Nars Andy Warhol Collection, the first makeup collaboration with the Warhol Foundation. Shimmery shadows (which aren’t a stretch from the vibrant colors in his screen prints of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor), shiny lip glosses named after Factory regulars Penny Arcade and Viva, and vivid nail polishes make up the line.
Makeup artist and Nars company namesake François Nars, who was first attracted to the artist’s intensely colored pop art when he was a tween, has more in common with Warhol than one would think. “His artistic point of view has always been so informative in my career as a makeup artist and as a photographer,” Nars told WWD. “Beyond that, I like to think there’s always been a connection between us. His sense of humor, and the way he approached art, is something I think we share.”
The Nars Andy Warhol Collection will be released in two installments. One range, which includes a Debbie Harry gift set and lip gloss packaged in a Warhol-appropriate soup can, will be available at Sephora on October 1. The other, which has an Edie Sedgwick gift set and a collection of four mini bottles of nail polish tucked in a box covered with Warhol’s photo booth pictures, will be at speciality and department stores on November 1.
And what are some of our favorites? Eyeshadow palettes that are laid out to resemble Warhol’s flower series with a quote by the artist etched in the mirror; and the Beautiful Darling gift set, which features an electric pink polish, white and mint green shadows, and hot pink lip gloss fashioned after Candy Darling in a case covered with a photo of the Warhol superstar.
Warhol obviously surpassed his “15 minutes of fame” — this year marks the 25th anniversary of his death and celebrations of his work abound. The Met will run the show “Regarding Warhol: 60 Artists, 50 Years” from September 18 to December 31.
Fans in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Tokyo will also get a taste of the artist’s work through the traveling exhibition “Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal.” And in what is perhaps the most obvious commemoration, Campbell’s is releasing electric-hued limited edition cans of tomato soup.
But of all the Warhol tributes in 2012, the Nars Andy Warhol Collection is the only one that will help transform you into a Warhol superstar.
“If you can convince yourself that you look fabulous, you can save yourself the trouble of primping,” reads a quote from Warhol on one of the Nars compacts. The Nars Andy Warhol line makes primping just as fabulous as looking fabulous.
