Brandon Cronenberg probably hates being compared to his legendary director father David, but man, do the two share a knack for creeping audiences out. At least if the trailer for Brandon’s first film, “Antiviral” is any indication. The scifi horror film, which competed in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, is about a future where society has become so celebrity obsessed that people seek out the diseases that their favorite stars have had so that they can, presumably, feel more connected to them. Yeah, it doesn’t really make that much sense, but we get the feeling plot takes the backseat to atmosphere here, and it appears that the film’s stark, washed out look is going to make footage of really horrific-looking stuff that much more visceral. The film stars Caleb Landry Jones, who (surprise!) gets more than he bargained for when he injects himself with the disease that’s killing his favorite actress. Lots of bleeding and sticking of sharp objects through flesh follows. Probably not for the weak of stomach.
