Sale of the Week, July 22-28: Olympics Artifacts Make for Great Auction Sport
SALE: The Olympic Games Sale
LOCATION: Bonhams London
DATE: July 25, 2pm
ABOUT: Bonhams is cashing in on the upcoming London Games by holding an auction of Olympics art and memorabilia. Lots include several Olympic torches, from as far back as the Nazi-hosted 1936 Games in Berlin. Other items on offer include medals, badges, maps, tickets, photographs, and official posters.
Most lots are priced in the hundreds of dollars, but there are exceptions. A Sèvres porcelain vase awarded to English boxer H.J. Mitchell after he won the gold medal in the 1924 Paris Olympiad could fetch £6,000-8,000 ($9,300-12,000). The tug-of-war silver medal from the 1908 Games in London is estimated to sell for £4,000-6,000 ($6,200-9,300), depending on bidders' tenacity.
