Legendary Australian winemaker Penfolds have released a limited edition of twelve individually numbered ampoules containing a rare vintage wine housed in a spectacular artist designed glass sculpture. Each of the twelve spectacular vessels come with a just as spectacular price tag of $168,000.
Described by Penfolds as “the ultimate reflection of winemaking heritage, innovation and artistic collaboration”, the Penfolds Ampoule Project is the ultimate reflection of winemaking heritage, innovation and artistic collaboration.
Designed and hand-blown by Nick Mount, an internationally recognised glass artist, the glass sculpture houses a scientific–grade ampoule created by veteran scientific glassblower Ray Leake which has been designed to store the wine in an ideal environment
Prominent Australian designer-maker Hendrik Forster prepared all the precious metal detailing while furniture craftsman Andrew Bartlett designed and made the bespoke Jarrah cabinet in which the ampoule is suspended.
Only able to be opened by a Penfolds specialist using a specially designed, tungsten-tipped, sterling silver scribe-snap, when a decision is made to open an ampoule a senior member of the Penfolds Winemaking team will personally attend a special opening ceremony for the owner during which the ampoule will be opened and the wine prepared.
The Penfolds 2004 Block 42 contained within the ampoule is a rare, single-vineyard wine that is only released in stellar vintages and is produced from the oldest continuously-producing Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world.
First released in the 1950s, the recent 2004 vintage resulted in beautifully aromatic, perfectly balanced and ripe Cabernet Sauvignon from Block 42, Kalimna Vineyard.
Each Ampoule is accompanied by a unique ‘Making Of’ booklet and Certificate of Ownership & Authenticity signed by Chief Winemaker Peter Gago and all contributing artists.
The Penfolds Ampoule is now available for purchase upon application. For more information visit http://www.penfolds.com/en/News-Events/Ampoule-Project.aspx
