1. Edvard Munch

Tate Modern's Edvard Munch exhibition is perfectly timed. One month after a version of "The Scream" sold at Sotheby's for £73.9 million — becoming the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction — the show is a fantastic opportunity to spend time with a body of work often overlooked because overexposed. Particularly notable is the exhibition's emphasis on the Norwegian painter's interest in new media, with the inclusion of almost as many photographs as paintings, as well as a selection of film pieces. The theory here is that technologies afforded Munch new ways of looking which subtly permeated a number of his most famous compositions: the strong diagonals in pieces such as "The Girls on the Bridge" (1902-03), or indeed, "The Scream," lend them an inescapable cinematic quality.

2. Dorothea Tanning

Prepared in close collaboration with Dorothea Tanning before her death last January, aged 101, this tightly curated show focuses solely on the surrealist artist's collage work, a medium she pursued for most of her sixty year-long career but only fully embraced from the 1970s. Highlights include a 1967 self-portrait of the artist as a dog, a photograph of her husband Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp playing chess (and losing) against a blindfolded chess master, and a framed slice of burnt toast on a graphite background intriguingly titled "Victory" (2005). Alison Jacques has a particular knack for giving women artists their due credit in the UK. Lygia Clark, Ana Mendieta, and Hannah Wilke all feature on her stable, and there's little doubt that this Tanning exhibition will prove a landmark in the appraisal of the artist's legacy.

3. Bold Tendencies

"Bold Tendencies," the outdoor sculpture exhibition on the rooftop of multistory car park that pretty much single-handedly put Peckham on the art map, is back — and it is more ambitious than ever. This 6^th edition will not only accommodate large-scale sculptural commissions by Laura Buckley, Sarah Cain, Carter Mull, Peles Empire, Mary Redmond, and Martin Westwood, but also a full program of events in collaboration with organizations ranging from PAMI (Peckham Artist Moving Image Festival) to Sadler's Wells.
