NEW YORK — Paula Cooper Gallery is marshalling a museum-worthy collection of contemporary artists — including Cindy Sherman, Lynda Benglis, Barbara Kruger, Richard Serra, Frank Stella, Mark di Suvero, and Lawrence Weiner — for an "Artists and Writers for Obama" event to raise money for Barak Obama's reelection campaign, set for June 28. Tickets to the 7-9 pm event cost $1,000 ($2,500 if you want to attend the private pre-event reception at 6:30pm), and some of the most powerful figures in literature, art, and architecture are on the event's host committee — many of them will also be in attendance — from Salman Rushdie, Toni Morrison, and Joyce Carol Oates to Barbara Gladstone, Agnes Gund, and Frank Gehry.
On the literary side, the event will feature readings by both Jonathans — Safran Foer and Franzen — and attorney general Eric T. Schneiderman, a musical performance by Shara Worden's solo project My Brightest Diamond, and a recorded message from senator Russ Feingold. Though Obama is notoriously fond of Franzen's fiction, he isn't expected to attend.
The gallery hosted a similar fundraiser during Obama's 2008 campaign, though next week's host committee is markedly more impressive — one of the perks of being a president, rather than a mere senator, presumably.
