– Occupy Movement Joins Frieze Protest: Protestors are gearing up to join the New York City & Vicinity District Council of Carpenters in demonstrating outside the inaugural Frieze New York over an ongoing labor dispute and "the rampant financialisation of art," according to representatives of the group Occupy Museums. The protest will involve both a traditional demonstration with signs and chants, and an alternative, barter-based fair near Frieze, similar to the one the same group staged last month during the Armory Show. – Swedish Minister Cake Cutting in Bad Taste: Sweden's minister of culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth's recent participation in a controversial cake performance has resulted in bomb threats and calls for her resignation. At an April 15 World Art Day event at Stockholm's Moderna Museet, Liljeroth sliced into a cake in the form of a black woman's body. The symbolic genital mutilation has caused a media firestorm, but the minister directs the attention to the installation's creator, artist Makode Aj Linde, claiming the work "is really about violence and racism... – Whitney Gets Grant for Downtown Installation: The New York museum has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to support the installation of its permanent collection in its new Meatpacking District location, which is projected to open in 2015. – Cunningham Studios Gets a New Tenant: The Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance is taking over Merce Cunningham's former studios in Greenwich Village at the Westbeth Center for the Arts. It will begin leasing the complex on July 1. [NYT] 

– What a Family Business: A father-and-daughter team suspected of making millions of dollars off forged art has been arrested in Moscow. The pair is accused of copying paintings by avant-garde Russian masters like Malevich and Rodchenko and selling them for over $100,000 a pop. [RT]

– An Art Critic in Mali: The designation of  the Great Mosque in Djenné, Mali as a Unesco World Heritage Site is causing problems for the locals, according to Holland Cotter. Every year, the citizens of Djenné replaster the mosque's walls as part of a festival event — but Unesco has sought to restore and preserve the mosque, blocking the festival until its work is finished. – Canadian Officer's Pentagon Art Prank: A supposed painting depicting Ensign Chuck Hord from 1908 hung in the halls of the Pentagon for nearly a year before a Wall Street Journal writer noticed that the naval officer's image was actually a photograph from 1982. The image was placed there as a prank by a Canadian officer who saw the vintage-looking image in Captain Eldrige Hord's Pentagon office, had it engraved with the misleading caption, and hung it on the wall. – Glasgow Art Scene is Humming: Following local boy Martin Boyce's recent Turner Prize win and with the fifth Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art opening later this month, the Scottish city's ascent to a more prominent position in the art world continues, thanks in part to a rich network of galleries and strong public support for the arts. – SoHo Realtors Plan Loft Law Witch Hunt: Residents of SoHo and NoHo have long been protected by the revolutionary zoning laws of the 1970s that required at least one city-certified artist to occupy any residential loft building. This summer a local realtor-led group is planning to conduct a survey of how many artist loft inhabitants are actually artists. The group needs to raise $25,000 for the survey — though a Kickstarter campaign seems unlikely. [DNAInfo]

– Broad Stage Expands: The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica will add a $12.3-million new building next door. The two-story structure, expected to break ground next year, will include a 165-seat music hall as well as rehearsal and storage space. [LAT]
