MTV is going back to its roots. No, not by actually showing music videos: Today it announced that it will be reviving its beloved '80s series of short video interludes created by the emerging art stars of the day, "Art Breaks." The short video-art bites typically last 30 seconds, and are set to be shown between commercials and regular programing. Artists whose work will be featured between more typical MTV fare like "16 and Pregnant" and "Jersey Shore" include Mickalene Thomas, Rashaad Newsome, and  Tala Madani.

Lending some creative credibility to the project, the new "Art Breaks" are curated by the contemporary art museum MoMA PS1 and the non-profit art organization Creative Time. "MoMA PS1 is a laboratory for contemporary practice," the museum's director Klaus Biesenbach was quoted as saying in a press release this morning. "This collaboration allows a younger generation of artists to experiment beyond the walls of the museum and onto the screens of a broad, international audience." Creative Time president and director Anne Pasternak echoed his sentiment: "We are very excited to be working with MTV in honoring its iconoclastic and influential roots in introducing cutting-edge art and culture to millions of people around the globe."

So, what to expect? If you want to get a peek — or are just one of those people who hasn't watched MTV in years — you can check out what's in store online, since "Art Breaks" already has its very own dedicated Tumblr site. There, you can get a taste of what made the '80s incarnation so fascinating, via clips from Jean-Michel Basquiat and Richard Prince, alongside new pieces by Newsome, Mickalene, and Madani (also embedded below). New video art shorts will continue to appear throughout the year, with another slate of five artists to be announced this summer.

Watch new "Art Breaks" videos by Tala Madani, Rashaad Newsome, and Mickalene Thomas below. Tala Madani:

Alas, MTV an institution of the visual married to the musical is giving me more of what I once loved about MTV. With hope, the art layered on top of these shows may provoke the absurd to chanel their energies into higher creativity. I am not judging, just hoping that videos return, and those who create videos, the artisans who begin with interpreting the musicians story get to showcase the best of what we as creative humans have to share with the world. MTV has been an inspirational source in my developement as an artist. As I sit here in my creative hermitage today painting, it was a delightful , hopeful break I took when opening up this email. Thank You, Artist Carole J McCoy Twitter @Cjthefineartist
