Who Is Theophilus London, and Why Is He Omnipresent at Art Basel Miami Beach?
Urban electro-pop/hip hop artist Theophilus London is set to take over Art Basel Miami Beach in big way, performing or appearing at no less than three events during the 2011 edition of the annual art fair: Spotify’s Music Loves Art event with Nas and Mark Farina at Ricochet Lounge on December 1; Bing’s Art of Night party with Young the Giant at the Shelborne Pool on December 2; and "Degrassi" and "90210" actress Shenae Grimes’s opening for her exhibition, “Travelers,” on December 3. After the Miami hangover wears off, the rapper will be featured in a Mick Rock photo exhibition at New York’s W Downtown on December 7.
So who is London? Born in Trinidad, the 24-year-old musician was raised in Brooklyn for a brief time before settling in the Poconos suburbs with his family. Back in New York, his first EP, “Lovers Holiday,” which was released last February by Warner Brothers, features guest appearances by Solange Knowles, Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara, and TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. His first full-release album, “Timez Are Weird These Days,” came out last July on the same label. Consisting of a mix of R&B, new wave, soul, pop, and hip-hop, with lyrics laced with stories of love, drugs, and the digital age, London’s music crosses several genres — great for dancing into the night at Art Basel Miami Beach’s endless parties.
London had a breakout performance at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, wowing the Riviera in a pimp-like black hat. And watch out for nude photos of the musician on the Internet — London’s SoHo apartment was recently robbed of all his electronics, including his computers and iPads. "I had mad naked pictures on there," London told the New York Daily News. "A lot of myself and, maybe, of other females." London’s effect on Miami has yet to be seen, but we’re sure he’ll have no problem fitting in with the debauchery down south.
