Getting to Know Ai Weiwei: A Multimedia Biographical Timeline

By Tom Chen

Published: May 2, 2011
Tomorrow marks one month since Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was detained at Beijing airport by authorities, on April 3 — according to some experts, the legal upper limit for police detention in China. In recent years, Ai had already built an international profile for his installation and architectural work, as well as a reputation for being an outspoken critic of abuses by Chinese authorities. His shocking disappearance has transformed him into an international symbol of dissent, galvanizing supporters across the world.

Here, ARTINFO compiles a timeline of the most important reference points in Ai's life, art, and activism, with links to previous coverage from our own site and around the Web.

Use the arrow keys to navigate or click on the "Previous" or "Next" button.

This post is a collaboration with the Building a Better Explainer project at NYU's Studio 20.
The timeline is made possible by ProPublica's TimelineSetter.
