Art on Paper Magazine Folds
In some sad news for the ad-strapped art press, venerable magazine Art on Paper has closed its doors, at least temporarily. In an announcement made on the eve of the debut of the Apple tablet--the so-called "Jesus machine" that is being hailed sight-unseen as the rescuer of print journalism--the bimonthly's co-publishers Shelly Bancroft and Peter Nesbett declared that the current financial environment could not sustain the New York-based publication.
Having launched in the 1960s under the name The Print Collectors Newsletter, the magazine catered to a small but committed audience of printed-matter fans, covering limited-editions, artists' books, and other works on paper in a variety of mediums. A precipitous drop in advertising during the recession, however, led to staff cuts, a dramatic scaling back of the magazine's size, and ultimately unsuccessful efforts at diversification into areas like poster sales.
According to Mediabistro.com, the publishers have announced that they hope "that six to twelve months from now, when the economy has improved, someone new will come along and revive the publication, either in print or digital form."
