Cindy Sherman to Receive the Jewish Museum's Man Ray Award
Photographer Cindy Shermanwill receive The Jewish Museums Man Ray Award for her distinguishedaccomplishments in advancing the world's understanding of the limitlesspossibilities of identity, and the profound impact of her work on thecontemporary art world.
Working as her own model for more than 30 years, Sherman is able todrastically manipulate her age and weight, leaving the artistalmost unrecognizable to the audience. Her works range from alarming anddistasteful to amusing and poignant.
The award underscores the museum’s continuing commitment toavant-garde art and artists, who, in the spirit of Man Ray and Sherman,explore issues of identity through their creative work.
The award will be presented on Nov. 17 in a special event featuringa viewing of Jewish Museum's new exhibition, "Alias Man Ray: The Art of Reinvention."Anticipated attendees include Sherman’s boyfriend, Talking Heads founder David Byrne, and actress Gaby Hoffman.
