Tobias Rehberger Wins Hans Thoma Prize
The German state Baden Württemberg has awarded its biennial Hans-Thoma Prize to the artist Tobias Rehberger.
A professor of sculpture at the acclaimed Städelschule in Frankfurt, where he is also serving as acting director, Rehberger was recognized for work that explores the relationships between design, interior architecture, and private spheres through painting, sculpture, installation art, and video.
The €25,000 prize was established in 1949 in honor of the painter and gallerist Hans Thoma. It is presented to visual artists who were born or who work in Baden Württemberg and whose work contributes to the advancement of contemporary art. Previous winners include Otto Dix, Anselm Kiefer, and Thomas Ruff.
The award ceremony will take place on August 9 in nearby Bernau; an exhibition devoted to the prize will begin at the Hans-Thoma-Kunstmuseum there on September 20.
