The premier art event, The Outsider Art Fair, has returned with its 26th edition featuring 63 galleries representing 35 cities and seven nations. The four-day event is taking place from January 18, 2018 to January 21, 2018 at Metropolitan Pavilion in New York. A number of artists, including Garrol Gayden, Nicole Appel, Raquel Albarran, Byron Smith, and Kenya Hanley are exhibiting their latest artworks. 10 first-time exhibitors are also taking part in this event. A wide variety of artworks, like tole painting, handicrafts, items made from wood, metal and copper, pencil sketches, drawings, watercolor and pastel color paintings, and ceramics are on display.
The term Outsider Art could be traced back thousands of years ago. However, it originated from another term art brut, coined by French artist and curator Jean Dubuffet in 1947. The latter term is described as works produced entirely by the imagination of artists, rather than by following the conventional methods of creating art. In 1972, Roger Cardinal wrote a book titled “Outsider Art” where he talked at length about art brut. He called the artists who defy conventional ways and produce art out of their own expressive impulse as an ‘Outsider’ artist.
The event calls upon such artists whose work is not conditioned by art history.
The Outsider Art Fair will be on from January 18 through January 21, 2018 at 125 W 18th St, New York, NY 10011, USA.
