David and Peggy Rockefeller Art Donations to MoMA
NEW YORK - David Rockefeller's pledge of $100 million to the Museum of Modern Art is the biggest news in the art world today. It's the largest monetary gift ever donated to the museum and will go toward MoMA's endowment. But Rockefeller, who for many years headed MoMA's board, has not only given money to the museum. He has also given or promised 17 artworks, including important pieces by Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne, Andre Derain, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Paul Signac, as well as works of Latin American and contemporary American art.

The Signac, a striking portrait of the late 19th century art critic Felix Feneon, was on prominent display when MoMA opened its new Taniguchi-designed building last fall. In the late 1960s, Rockefeller and his late brother, Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller, helped to purchase the Gertrude Stein collection of modern art for MoMA. In 1994, the year after Rockefeller stepped down from his position as board chairman, MoMA displayed "Masterpieces from the David and Peggy Rockefeller Collection," which included the MoMA gifts as well as works promised to other museums such as the National Gallery in Washington, DC. New York Times critic Michael Kimmelman called the show, which included many of the works shown below, "a thank-you note to Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller in the form of a small and beautiful exhibition" and "one of the most pleasurable exhibitions in New York City in some time."
