Marian Goodman Gallery in New York is presenting an exhibition of works by Gerhard Richter, the German painter and one of the giants of the contemporary arts scene, from Nov. 17 to Jan. 14, 2006.

Richter, born in 1932, has had recent solo shows at the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum in 2003 and at the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago (in 2002).

Richter is perhaps best known for his blurred photo paintings, based on snapshots he has either found or taken himself; and for his large-scale abstract paintings, for which he sometimes uses a squeegee to apply the paint. In both styles of work, a key thematic concern for Richter is the relationship between illusion and reality.
