The Love List: Power Couples of the Art World

An unregulated domain where the success of multimillion-dollar transactions, the trajectory of careers, and the kindness of the historical record often come down to personal relationships, the modern art world has always been hotbed, literally, of power couples — pairs of dedicated strivers who seal their mutual pursuit of art's compensations within the bonds of love. Together, these couples have sometimes achieved great things. Where would Jasper Johns have been without Robert Rauschenberg (and Rauschenberg without Merce Cunningham)? Leo Castelli without Ileana Sonnabend? Christo without Jeanne-Claude? Colin de Land without Pat Hearn? They would have been lonelier, that's for sure.

This Valentine's Day, ARTINFO presents a tribute to the pairings who add some old-fashioned solidity, not to mention a dash of glamor and sexiness, to the art world. Because there are so many, we had to make some ground rules. For one thing, collector couples do not make the list — if they did it would go on forever. Also, both halves must play a significant role in the art establishment. In other words, artist Sam Taylor-Wood and White Cube dealer Jay Jopling were an art-world power couple; Taylor-Wood and 21-year-old actor Aaron Johnson are not.

But enough preamble! Here we fondly present a few of the lovebirds who go together like light and space. See the slide show at left for adorable photos.
