Description

Christie's May 8th Evening Sale of Post-War and Contemporary Art will present an unprecedented grouping of collections and icons, many of which have not been seen outside of museum exhibitions for several decades. The Pincus Collection is one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of Abstract Expressionism and will include major canvases from Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. The Collection of Evelyn D. Haas will feature exciting works spanning the Post-war to the Contemporary with works by Richard Diebenkorn and Barnett Newman to Vija Celmins and Richard Prince. As part of our most impressive grouping of Calders to come to auction, the Estate of the influential 'Harvard Five' architect and pioneer of modern design, Eliot Noyes, will feature two works by Alexander Calder distinguished by their graceful movement and chromatic integrity, the fiery red Untitled, 1957 and the alluring Snow Flurry, 1950, among the finest examples of the artist's iconic mobiles. We are also proud to feature a suite of paintings by Gerhard Richter including the stunning Abstraktes Bild (798-3), 1993 dating from Gerhard Richter's most desired period of abstraction and Seestück (Leicht bewölkt), 1969, a sublime work of photo-realistic mastery in painting. Finally, Christie's is proud to announce the upcoming auction of Yves Klein's legendary Fire-Color Painting FC 1, widely acclaimed as one of the most important works of Post-War European art to come to the market. Painting in the last days leading up to his premature death FC1 acquired an iconic status soon after the release of Klein's film, La Revolution Bleue, where the celebrated recording of the painting's creation inscribed FC 1 in the 20th Century collective memory. We'd like to invite you to view sale highlights at our pre-sale exhibition at Christie's Rockefeller Plaza galleries from 4th-8th of May. Should you have any questions about the sale, we would be delighted to assist you.
